My other day job . . . .

So I have been super busy at uni the last 4 months, I have been designing for my finale year project (which will also be placed in an exhibition as well), been in hospital for some random surgery, been printing like made for sampling and lengths. Which has resulted in losing a pair of jeans to a lot of print paste! But these 4 months have been great and terrible all at the same time. So I thought I would give a little look see into my little world, the Print Studio at RMIT.

This little photo collage shows and tells the story about me printing one of my lengths for assessment due in a week! This is my Graceful Poppy design, simple but pretty I would say. Unfortunately I don't have an pictures of me printing, which is a bit sad, because I do wear an awesome lab coat that is rainbow coloured due to print paste!
In this image you can see the table and my screen on the table (which is as tall as me!).

Here is the first screen to my Graceful Poppy design, this design has 3 colours/screens that blend with each other to create more that just a 3 colour print. The red on the screen is the emulsion, this gets exposed through a big UV lamp in the exposure room. The "white" or clear flowers has no emulsion, therefore this is where the print paste goes through.
This is a good photo to show how lengths are printed, here you can see the fist layer is down and now I am procedding with the second layer. When printing a length we use stops on the rails and little markers on the screen. The stop gap for this design is 36.5cms, so I measure between the stops then line the screen up against the railing, with the help of the marker. (below gives an idea with what I am trying explain.)
With a length repeat, I print at every second stop. The reasoning for this is to let the print paste dry completely, this reduces smudging and blurry printing. This process sounds like it takes forever to produce a length, but a 3 colour print will take between 30-40 minutes.

So after all that printing I have come up with a length that looks something like this!

Thanks for making it all the way through this post, hope it was slightly educational! Will put up more post of final work for my exhibition that is taking place on the 22-23 November.

Bridal Inspiration

Well, I am doing a fun design project for bridal wear, thanks to Silk Trader a wonderful Melbourne silk fabric shop!

Above is my mood/concept board, I love the idea of recreating the sequins and confetti into a wonderful design, it will be a simple design but classic. You can never go wrong with dots. There is also ribbons and birds that i will be playing with. It is a little challenging as it is restricting project because I have to think under what circumstance this fabric will be used for. But what I love about this project is the colour palette and the fact that I get to print on fabulous silk!!!
Still trying to refine a few of my designs so they look fantastic for a wedding! Sneak peak will come soon!

Have a great weekend

Inspiration . . .

I am super excited, in 2 weeks it will be Easter and holiday time off from Uni. A big sigh of relief! So as I always do in my holidays in the past is go nuts on the sewing machine, and this is no exception for this little break. I have a little stack of fabric that i have been adding to over the months and now it's time for making!

This little blog/shop has totally gotten me pumped to sew. I think this blog is a great one to explore as she goes through different fabrics, sewing techniques and just inspirations through time. Loving it!

My other holiday must do activity is knitting. Yes I need to learn for Uni. It is for my experimental class, creating some wondrous creation with Knit Knot Net or Coil. My little idea is knit some rope, after knitting a lot of rope I will hopefully knot. Using some sweet knots like the Turk's Head are the Chain Sennit. I will keep you posted with my little project!

Cactus kind of day . . .

OK so at uni one of our exciting assignments is creating wall stickers. It does sound pretty average in one way, but I am actually embracing it too much! What makes today a crazy cactus day is that I have been doing my concept board(which is due tomorrow!) and there are cacti every where. But the cutest thing is my boyfriend, Chris, gave me a gift of a ity pity pot of cacti . . . what a cutie!

My ity pity cacti!
